Three Reminders To Architects- Bibliography Entry

The author starts the article by explaining the primary forms, being related to light forms in a way that it satisfies human eye by definition of geometrical forms and their line of art. He also talks about the facts of architecture and how they form abstractions just like medium of ideas and materialization of a possible idea being the basics of creating a form of art.

Mass is referred to a surface with division and lines giving mass to its uniqueness. Mass and Surface are the most important aspect of architectural work as they are determined by the plan. The author states the plan as being the generator. Mass is defined by light and different forms of light defines different shapes as in cubes, cones, cylinders etc. He states them as the basics of plastic art

‘İt is for the reason that these are beautiful forms, the most beautiful forms’

Gothic architecture is a combination of complex geometry and not fundamentally based on basic shapes. That’s why the cathedral is not beautiful, and it is considered as the form satisfaction for plastic art.

‘The cathedral is not plastic work; it is drama; a fight against the force of gravity, which is a sensation of a sentimental nature’.

Now a days engineers are using primary elements with coordination with rules. The author refers to architecture as a play of masses in accordance with light, strengthening surfaces. To make the surface utilitarian we must force division of surfaces and generation of line. He states architectural form as a house, temple or factory with expressing his opinion on surfaces of temple and factory having walls with holes. Modern construction must have geometrical surfaces with its solutions.

Pure Geometry is considered as the basis of any architecture with accusation to lines. But the author also states that in today’s world the architects are afraid of this because they want to construct something different.

In the last part of this article the author talks about the problems of modern age being the restoration of plain masses and how surfaces are made according to the necessities. He states this kind of geometry as a fear for new architects. Now adays what architects consider as their main idea and basis of their design is the necessities from which they generate lines of masses making it utilitarian. This is how they create plastic facts, clear and limpid giving the human mind satisfaction with geometric forms. Engineers’ todays are also applying the principles set by Bramante and Raphael which states that symmetry, proportion, geometry and regulation demonstrating classical antiquity.

To conclude, I would like to talk about how the author states the use of geometry as plastic art and the definition of mass through light. He states the cathedral as not being plastic as it didn’t have the primary basics but still containing subjective part of plasticity. The examples given in the article of gothic architecture like The Pyramids, The Tower of Babylon, The Gates of Samarkand, The Parthenon and etc are not based on basic shapes but are the expression of complex geometrical definition.
